New Massage Instructor Brings Over 30 Years Experience

We are proud to welcome Shari Sunshine, LMT, as our new Massage Technique instructor, beginning in March, 2008.  Shari was first Certified as a Massage Practitioner in 1978, and has since received training in Ortho-Bionomy® from its founder Arthur Pauls, and been Certified in Polarity Therapy®, Rubenfeld Synergy®, Thai Massage, Hypnosis, Healing Chi Kung and more.  Shari also had the great fortune to study as an apprentice to Shlomo Efrat, senior student and assistant to Moshe Feldenkrais in Jerusalem, Israel, as well as numerous traditional healers in India, Nepal, and China.  Shari founded the Jerusalem Center for the Healing Arts, co-founded the Ashland Massage Institute and Syntropy International, and served as the principle massage instructor at the Maui School of Therapeutic Massage for ten years.  In the classroom, she combines boundless enthusiasm for teaching and learning with over thirty years of hands-on experience.  Click here for a link to her Massage Technique class.

CALIFORNIA LAW NOW REQUIRES 500 HOURS FOR CERTIFICATION AS A MASSAGE THERAPIST

On Saturday, September 27, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed SB 731 into law. In short, the law states that to become a Certified Massage Therapist, students must complete 500 hours of training, with 250 of those hours taken consecutively at an Approved school.  The law also requires that students pass an Approved certification exam, which will likely be either the National Certification Exam or the MBLEx.  Arcata School of Massage is pleased with the outcome of the legislation, though it changes nothing about our program.  We have always offered 605 course hours and a 95-hour clinical internship.  Arcata School of Massage is an NCBTMB Assigned School, and graduates are eligible and well prepared to take both the National Certification Exam and the MBLEx. Click here for a link to the new Law.

Non-Violent Communication, Strength Training, Reflexology, Energy Work, and Aromatherapy Added

As part of our ongoing efforts to make the 700-hour Somatic Bodywork and Massage Certification Program the best it can be, we've teamed up with local practitioners to bring these excellent seminars into our curriculum.  Instructors from the Center for Reflexology, Moonrise Herbs, Syntropy International, and Martial Athletics are now woven into the tapestry of the ASM experience.

700-hour CMT Program with Somatic Bodywork and National Exam Prep

The Arcata School of Massage offers a balanced curriculum which includes both the clinical and the intuitive, providing practical training in both the art and the science of bodywork. With the benefits of our clinic internship, work-trade scholarships, and comprehensive business training, every graduate of ASM who has sought employment is now working... and loving what they do.

A Certificate from ASM makes you eligible to take the National Certification Exam and the MBLEx, required or accepted for Licensure or Certification in all but six states that have laws regulating massage. ASM is a California BPPVE Approved Vocational School, recognized by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork, the American Massage Therapy Association, and is a member of the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals Massage School Alliance.

We accept small classes of students who are dedicated to a life and a career of learning and service as professional therapists. Classes are scheduled to accomodate students who need to work while in school (see Course Schedules). We are now enrolling for Daytime classes (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and Evening classes (5 -9 p.m.).

All of our instructors work as therapists, and we teach from our experience as career professionals. The program includes Swedish Massage, Somatic Bodywork, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Therapeutic Treatements, Healing Chi Kung, Hot Stone Massage, Business and more. Our Applied Anatomy, Pathology, and Body Systems courses are hands-on preparation for the National Certification Exam. Our unique in-house clinic internship (included in the program) gives you real-world experience in a full-service massage clinic. Click here for complete program information.
